Day Two Scouting Combine Standouts

Day two of the NFL scouting combine is when the action begins. Its all offense with the quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers.

There are so many players to choose from to talk about today but I'll just talk about a select few big named guys.

Jahvid Best I really believe had a great day. Best ran the fastest 40 yard dash of any running back at the combine along with some strong performances in the drills. He helped push his draft stock to a solid late first round selection, but don't be surprised if he slips to the top of the second.

Best might slip because of a guy like Ryan Matthews. who produced a 4.45 in the 40 which will help his stock as he too tries to hang on to a late first round grade.

Ben Tate ran a 4.43 40 and is an intriguing player. He is one of those types of guys that is beginning to get a lot of people learning who he is and could soon be moving up his draft stock.

CJ Spiller I think in some ways disappointed in his 40 yard dash time. He ran a 4.37 which is still a great time but he is a guy people expected to get sub 4.3.

Onto the wide receivers who overall looked very good.

A couple standouts in the drills like Mike Williams. Although he looked great catching the ball he ran slow in the 40 and reports are that he had some bad interviews blaming his quiting the Syracuse football team on everyone but himself.

Jacoby Ford from Clemson ran the fastest 40 of the combine so far. Not much to be said about a straight line speed guy like him, he will get drafted for his speed hang around the league three years then disappear when a new fast guy comes in the league.

Golden Tate in my eyes helped himself the most today. Ran exceptional 40's in the low 4.4's and showed great hands in the drills. He is another guy like Best and Matthews looking to try to sneak into the end of the first round.

  1. What do you think of the recent free agent signings? Being from Chicago, I’m a huge Bears fan. I was somewhat surprised and left satisfied this last Friday to hear we signed two huge free agents. With the signing of probably the biggest name in free agency this summer in Julius Peppers and in the signing of Chester Taylor I think we are the leading the pack in free agent signing thus far. Obviously Julius Peppers was the bigger pick up but you can’t underestimate the signing of Chester Taylor. Not only do we get a great running back but also in return we take a great running back away from a conference opponent, Minnesota Vikings. Whether they’ll be the same team as last year is still up in the air, mostly because the Brett Farve drama series has begun and he probably won’t decide if he’s playing or not till the end of training camp. Honestly, that guy should have his own reality T.V. show with what he’s been pulling these past two years. But it’s hard to hate on him with the numbers he’s been pulling off. Him and Adrian Peterson are a serious combination, and if Favre decides to return I think they’ll be a serious contender again. Hopefully Jay Cutler will wake up this upcoming season and not throw the ball to the other team every other play. I was happy about the signings of Peppers and Taylor, but I would like to see the front office get some help for Cutler. Whether some improvements on the O-line or some help in the receiving core. Either would help Cutler both mentally and skill wise.

  2. Hi Ted,

I am glad that you have found a topic/focus that keeps you writing and interested in this blog space. I can see that you are attracting readers from our class. This is great! Your sports writing style is clear and direct. You seem no-nonsense and I trust your opinion(s) on players and games. I think you have a knack for this.

Keep writing! Remember that you need to post 2 times a week (not on the same day) in order to practice writing consistently. While there may not be a game/controversy you want to respond to, you could talk about others things sporty. Have you thought about using pictures and clips of plays for your blog? That might interest your readers.
